Here is an overview of the structure of the Minor Divisions in Manitoba (from Softball Manitoba). This explains the various categories of play, which are now A (community ball, formerly referred to as “B ball”), AA (regional teams) and AAA (formerly referred to as “A ball”).
WHAT ARE THE AGE GROUPINGS?
For 2020, this is how the age groupings are defined (not by SMSA, but rather by the league in which we play):
- players aged 5 – 8 as of December 31, 2021: Timbits
- players aged 9 and 10 as of December 31, 2021: U10
- players aged 11 and 12 as of December 31, 2021: U12
- players aged 13 and 14 as of December 31, 2021: U14
- players aged 15 and 16 as of December 31, 2021: U16
- players aged 17 and over as of December 31, 2021: U19
WHEN AND WHERE DO WE PLAY?
SMSA is linked in with Winnipeg South West Youth Softball league, which means that SMSA teams will be allocated into a specific “loop” of random teams. This will necessitate travel to Winnipeg (although a roughly equal number of home games will be played in Oakbank and/or Dugald).
Note that the team structures and rosters that we generate for the regular community season may not reflect the structure and/or size of any team(s) attending tournaments (including Provincials) or exhibition games. As well, throughout the regular season (May and June), it is not unusual for players to occasionally “play up” to older age levels or play laterally between SMSA teams. This helps SMSA keep the team roster sizes small and gives many players opportunities which may not have otherwise been available.
Learn to Play teams will play based on diamond availability. More information will be posted here closer to the start of season. The following are traditionally the days when softball is played, although note that this is subject to change:
- U10: Mondays and Wednesdays
- U12: Tuesdays and Thursdays
- U14: Mondays and Wednesdays
- U16: Tuesdays and Thursdays
- U19: to be determined
WHEN DO GAMES START?
Games usually start at 7:00pm, although most coaches will expect players to arrive and be ready for warm-ups at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before game time. Coaches will set dedicated practice days/times once the final roster is complete.
WHEN DOES THE SEASON START?
The season will begin in approximately late April/early May, weather depending, and continue until the end of June/early July. Provincial Championships (often just called “Provincials”), for those teams participating, take place in late June/early July, and the schedule for these can be found on the Softball Manitoba website. Further information on Provincials can be obtained from your head coach. It is generally assumed that SMSA B1 teams will participate at Provincials.
As the season begins, each Springfield Heat team will have its own page here on the SMSA website (under “Teams” in the menu above). This is where you will find team schedules and coach contact information.
Don’t forget: we run regular skills and pitching/catching clinics during the Winter season to give players a chance to refine their existing skills and learn new ones. Click on Clinics above in the menu for more information.
