Registration live – Summer 2020 season

Hi everyone!

We are now our plan for the upcoming softball season. As you know, Softball MB just got approval to continue with a softball season as of June 1st. The league that we typically play in is a city league and they plan to start the week of June 15. We have decided that Springfield will not be participating in league play this year for the following reasons:

  • Survey results did not provide enough confirmation of interest for a full season
  • Games bring on additional guidelines/issues to manage
  • Our decision to refund means re-opening registration, which will take time, and the league needs to know our teams by June 3rd. We cannot meet this timeline.

With that said, we understand that many of our players are still anxious to play ball so this is what we will be doing this season:

  • Create teams based on right age group (LTP, U10, U12, etc) and assign coaches
  • Run 1-2 practices a week from June 15 – July 31 (7 weeks, primarily on weeknights, in Oakbank)
  • Scrimmage games if possible
  • Option for Provincials for those teams that want to participate – Provincials are going to be scheduled for the middle 3 weekends of August
  • Cost will be $100 for all age groups except for LTP which will be $80
  • Sanitizing of balls and other guidelines will still be followed

For our U16 players – You are able to register for our season as well, but based on the likelihood of low numbers, your child will be placed on a U14 team. Alternatively if your daughter wants to play for a city U16 team, please email us and we can pass your information on.

Overall, we feel this approach gives families opportunities for their kids to play some ball, while keeping options open for camping and cottages on the weekends. Missing the competition is going to be tough, but focus on development will still go a long way in preparing everyone for the 2021 season!

The link for the coming season is below. Registration is only open until Sunday, June 7th. Late registrations will not be accepted.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Play ball!

OK everyone, Softball Manitoba has given the green light for a season to start soon. Registration will begin shortly (details to be updated here).

In the meantime, the SMSA Executive is asking all players and their families to review the following two documents prior to registration:

  1. Softball Canada Return to Play Guidelines #2 (21 May 2020).
  2. Softball Manitoba Return to Play Overview.

More details coming very, very soon. Check back often.

8 May 2020 update from Softball Manitoba

SMSA received the following update from Softball Manitoba today:

Softball Manitoba’s Board and Staff, along with Sport Manitoba and Softball Canada are currently working on a Return To Play document required by the government to attain clearance on playing our game this summer. This will be finalized and submitted to the Manitoba Health Authority (May 15 by Sport MB) in an effort to be considered a safe enough sport to resume play (when and with what restrictions are our first questions for them). We then meet as a Board on May 21 and will have an updated announcement on our website and sent out to all of the Leagues and ‘A’ Organization Presidents on May 22.

21 April 2020 update

Hello SMSA players and families

We wanted to provide you with an update on the 2020 Softball season as Softball MB just provided us with an update a couple of days ago. Softball MB has extended the hold on softball activities until May 31st due to COVID-19. This means that if there is a season this year, it will either be shortened, or extended into the summer.

Based on this information, we have decided to issue refunds for the 2020 softball season. We will process those refunds this coming week through TeamSnap. Refunds will take approx. 15- 21 days to appear on your statement. We remain hopeful that some form of Springfield Heat softball will be available this year, and if so, we will notify you and re-open registration based on the new season criteria.

We are not issuing refunds for those that registered for winter clinics. We plan to make them up as soon as we are able. Ideally that is this summer where we can enjoy the great outdoors. If not, it will be in the fall. We will keep our clinic registered families updated on this as well.

I know how disappointed many of you are about this news. It was a really hard decision to make but with the softball season being postponed by at least a month, we had no choice.

I am personally hopeful that Manitobans will continue to take this pandemic seriously so we can flatten the curve and get back to doing what we ALL love to do – supporting/driving/coaching/cheering/playing with our kids with the sports and activities they love so much.

I hope you and your families continue to stay healthy and safe, and please tell your players that we are going to do our best to ensure some form of softball is available this year.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you.
