2nd Annual Banquet – what a night!

Thanks to all those families and players (and coaches and volunteers!) for making our 2nd annual banquet on 14 September a fantastic night! Congratulations to those players who took home awards. It was a great evening, with lots of stories and laughter!

Keep an eye out for an announcement for our Annual General Meeting. All are welcome! We are always welcoming new coaches and volunteers into SMSA. In fact, everyone who is involved currently (coaches, exec members, volunteers) got their start by simply showing up and offering to help. SMSA prides itself on being a big family, because that’s EXACTLY what we are.

11 June 2019 Announcements

Hi everyone,

We are just past mid-season, and we are hearing excellent things from parents, coaches and players about how everyone is doing this season. SMSA is all about player development, as everyone knows, so it is great to see the players really get stuck into learning the sport and honing their skills!

A few announcements:

Yep, once again SMSA will be having a float in the Chickendaze parade, so it’s time for anyone and everyone with a Heat jersey to come out (including parents)!

  • Meet in the CO-OP parking lot along the road to the RM building around 10:00am on Saturday, 15 June 2019, before the parade in your team jersey!
  • If you are available to help out in decorating this year’s float on Friday night, June 14th, please let us know (springfieldminorsoftball@gmail.com)!
  • Dress for the elements!
  • Water bottles will be available on the float
  • Parents – you are welcome to join us – especially LTP parents. (not mandatory though)
  • Coaches and bench staff, if available, we would love to have you on the float!

Please join us for our annual end of season AWARDS BANQUET at the Dugald Community Club on Saturday, 14 September 2019!

Tickets, voting information and the program will be available soon. SMSA is looking for parents interested in joining our Banquet Committee. If you are interested/able, please let us know.

Congratulations U12!

Huge congratulations to the Springfield Heat U12 Red team for taking home the GOLD MEDAL in the U12 Division of this weekend’s annual Southdale Fast Pitch Tournament! The team went undefeated in three round robin games and finished by beating West St Paul to take home the Gold Medal. Well done girls! Everyone in SMSA is super proud of you!

Special invitation to all SMSA players and families

This coming Saturday (25 May) the Eastman Wildcats U14A team will play a double-header against Central Energy (another U14A team) at Diamond 2 in Oakbank.  The games will be at 12pm and 2pm.

The Eastman club has extended a special invitation to all SMSA players and families to come experience “A” ball first hand.

As many of you know, our growing softball community here in Springfield has a long history (almost ten years!).  What some folks may not know, however, is that many of our players from SMSA have gone on to play high-level competitive “A” softball in Manitoba as members of the very same Eastman Wildcats club.  These girls train all year round for this level of competitive softball, so it is fairly serious stuff!

By taking in one or both games, you and your player can experience the thrill of seeing players utilise the VERY SAME SKILLSthey were initially taught in early community programmes like SMSA here in Springfield.

The U14A Wildcats have four players on their team that started their softball careers right here in Springfield through SMSA: Macki Bergen, Logan Harz, Paige Ducharme and Lexie Fazio.  As well, the head coach, Brendan Harz, is a former SMSA LTP and U10 coach.

All up, this is a great opportunity for your daughter to see what all her hard work can lead to. As we all know, SMSA is all about player development, so Saturday will be an opportunity to see one result of all that hard work.

You can learn more about “A” ball at this Softball Manitoba website(which will have information about tryouts in August).  We also have a U12A Wildcats team consisting of three players from Springfield (Mikayla D’Ottavio, Abigail Ducharme and Emma Franklin), and Perry Ducharme (whom many of you know through his long-standing presence in SMSA) serves as Team Manager.  The complete “A” ball schedule (for U12, U14 and U16) can be found here.

Go Wildcats!

20 April 2019 update

By now you should know what team your player is on and who their coach is. Our association uses TeamSnap for league and team scheduling/messaging. You should have a log in and password from registration which you will need to access your team’s information. If you are having any issues with this – please let us know.

The season is set to start on 29 April 2019 (Monday), although as of today (20 April 2019) we do not yet have the team schedules. Once your coach is aware of the schedule she/he will post the games on TeamSnap. Note also that they will also be posting up practice information on TeamSnap as well. The time and place of your practices will depend on your coach, but for U10 and up please expect 2 games a week and 1 practice a week.

SMSA will be running pitching clinics during the week of April 22nd. This schedule is available on the “Clinics” teamsnap page. Some teams will also be running indoor and/or outdoor practices. Again, please check TeamSnap regularly.

If you have not heard from your coach, or have any questions – please see below for their contact information. If two coaches are listed for your daughter’s age group, feel free to email them both simultaneously the correct coach will be in touch with you.

There is a huge amount of buzz in the community about softball this season, and SMSA is HUGELY excited about each of our teams. We have a large LTP programme, which is great to see, and many of the older girls’ teams’ coaches are already making plans for tournaments and Provincials. For parents in our LTP programme, please grab some sunflower seeds and bring your younger player to any of the home games that the older girls are playing. You can reach out to any of the coaches for their specific team schedule, or they will be posted under the “Teams” menu above. It is a great way to (1) show them how what they are learning is put to use as they get older, (2) learn new songs for cheering and (3) meet and get some tips from some of our older players. Of course, the extra fan base is always welcome!

We are looking forward to a great season of softball in our community!

Go Heat!!

Registration deadline: 10 March

This is a friendly reminder to be sure to get your daughters’ registration in for softball by the 10th if she is intending to play softball this year. We are off to a great start with registration and will be hosting either one or more teams at all categories of LTP, U10, U12, U14. Registrations for these age groups may not be accepted after March 10th as the rosters are filling up.

We are determined to host a U16 and U19 team again this year. We know you’re out there! We have some registrations to date but need a few more. We are also looking for coaches for these categories.

For more registration information, and to access the online registration system, follow our “2019 registration” link above in the menu or click here.

Have a great day!

2 March 2019 update

Looking outside, it’s hard to believe that spring is on the way – but based the volume of registrants received so far, after our first registration night, I think it’s safe to say that may of us are ready to start thinking about getting outdoors again!

For those registered already, you should have received an invite to Team Snap for our upcoming skills clinics.  If you haven’t received an invite, please let me know (springfieldminorsoftball@gmail.com).

We know you’re out there!  Whether you are interested in taking on a head coach or assistant coach position, SMSA will be there to help get you started and provide as much support as you need.  Training is provided by SMSA and Softball MB also offers a coaching certification course to obtain your coaching certification if you’re interested.  SMSA covers the clinic expense for those coaching in the current season and entering their team into provincials.

Upcoming dates for your calendar are below.  Remember, there is no charge for skills clinics, and if you are already a registered player, there is no need to register for a clinic.  Pitching clinics are available at a drop in fee for $15 per session.

FINAL IN-PERSON REGISTRATION NIGHT AT ONE INSURANCE ARENA 7-9PM (NOTE:  online registration closes on Mar. 10th – in person registration is not required but an option for those who want to drop off a payment or review the online registration process)

6-7:15PM  – SKILLS CLINIC AT SPRINGFIELD COLLEGIATE (all ages including LTP – participants will be split into groups)

(other upcoming pitching and skills clinic dates on Team Snap)

SOFTBALL NIGHT – an evening of skills, games, fun competitions.  SMSA uses information gathered at Softball night through player evaluations to assist with player placements when there are more than one team in an age category or a player is being considered for age advancement.   We are also able to determine what category a team should be placed into for league based on observations and discussions that evening.  Further details to follow but please save the date.

Please remember to register for the 2019 season by the Mar. 10th deadline if you haven’t already.  If there are enough players to form a team by March 10th, SMSA will not accept late registrations.  (Exceptions may apply in extreme circumstances)  As much as we want to see all players register, we also need to be fair to other players, the process and the organizers.

Hope to see you soon!

Charmaine Bergen

President, SMSA
